About Shuttleworks...

The concept of ShuttleWorks was started by Bob Ullah in 1982 and is based upon the ethos that the sport should be accessible to all young people, dispelling the myth that it was an elite sport. It was also based on some comments from fellow coaches who would dismiss a player's ability within one or two sessions and miss players who were naturally gifted.

Bob, in his capacity of Youth Worker, attended International Exchange Programmes to France, Germany and Japan and has been fortunate to attend the European Junior Badminton Summer Coaching School, Denmark 2001, X11 World Badminton Championships Coaches Conference Seville 2001 and both World Badminton Team Championship Coaches Conferences held in Glasgow. He wanted an open minded approach to early year development and began to develop a style that would look at the players holistically by focussing not only on the sport but the young player as an individual with social and personal development needs.

Bob has been working in the Cockburn Centre on a Saturday morning since 1991. The Club's success is also due to the support from many volunteer coaches particularly Phil McBride, Amanda Currie, Iain Pringle, Maireadh Pringle, Graeme Smith and David Stewart. They deserve great credit, as do the committee members.

ShuttleWorks believe that players can be nurtured and sometimes a young player needs to develop at their own pace. It looks at how development needs can be transferred onto the court, ensuring that social and personal interaction assists the player to think about badminton as a social activity with the option to progress as far as they wish. It has developed into a self-financing organisation. ShuttleWorks Cockburn never tries to influence players and will always encourage players to take advice from any coach allowing the player to select the advice and guidance that suits their own individual style of play.

2010 and beyond: We need to get back to basics and concentrate on play, while providing the players with the information on the relevant Tournaments they can enter and help them and their parents make decisions about entering.
